How to name a track
The new EP I am releasing has already a title:
It will be titled “Seek & Destroy” after the Metallica’s song (of which there is also a remix on the EP).
But what about the rest of the tracks?
On my former EPs the choice between title A and title B was always time consuming until title C would show up, friend A suggested title D and turned the decision process even more difficult.
On top of this I always had on the back of my head the question: “Does the title really matter?” and Aphex Twin came to mind, along with Kero and Kim Cascone who more than often title their works “untitled”.
Does it have to do with the track itself? The name of the EP used as the main motto and the track titles as chapters of a story? Sound bytes that are catchy and fun? Words that appeal to the imagination?
Questions, Questions and more QUESTIONS!!!!
And then life itself barges into your option’s box. In my case, technology, plays more and more a role in it.
One of the things that always catches my imagination are the CAPTCHAs used, on websites everywhere, to make sure “you are human“. There is something about, this security step, that has me reloading and reloading and reloading the CAPTCHA to see if I run into some combination that is weird enough to make me laugh.
And that is how I got to the conclusion that, this time, I would not be spending much thought in how to name my new tracks: I went to the main page of Twitter, clicked “Join” and picked up the first ten CAPTCHAs (and no I did not cheat).
With no further due, here are the names of the tracks on the upcoming EP:
01. And Rudwick
02. The Greedily
03. Crossley Assured
04. Lariat Do
05. For Amazing
06. 27 moog
07. Interven Birdie
08. Leiter Contacts
09. Seek&Destroy (Capital Trundled rmx)
10. Palatal Industry
As you might notice, for those in the know of musical instruments, track 6 is going to be a bitch to make. “27 moog”?! Murphy (the one of the weird laws) keeps playing around with me.
Now that I have the names, maybe I will be inspired and influenced by them to produce the remaing tracks

I thinks the Captcha approach to naming your work is a splendid idea.
It’s a pretty arbitrary business really. Unless you’re after a top 40 hit and the title needs to be remembered in HMV (but who buys CDs any more?), I think a track’s title only really has relevance to its creator.
I’m naming my latest collection after favourite places in Asturias – but that will be meaningless to anybody else I guess. Then again, I do try to recall a place that says something about the track. For example, Naranjo de Bulnes was chosen because, as a rock, it evokes the hard edges to my take on Cosecha (which itself is relevant to the harvesting of sound from Twitter).
Guess what, I’m just contradicting myself entirely. Ah well. As you can see, I don’t attach a huge amount of significance to song titles.
My only other observation is 10 tracks – surely an LP rather than an EP (unless you’re as prolific as Prince).
roflmao..fantastic. THANKS.. no, REALLY, that is was a stroke of genius
