Twitter misses (again) the focus

Twitter has announced the introduction of verification accounts. When I first read the headlines I was happy about it: I thought that Twitter execs were actually aiming to fight the spam accounts that do nothing but turn Twitter slower and, if you are like me, make legitimate users waste a lot of time by clicking on that e-mail link and see what that person is all about.

So it was sadly that I read that, instead of having the fight against spam as their main goal, Twitter execs decided to tend to the celebrities of LA and create this special verified accounts to stop impersonators by giving them a nice bage on their profile.

I left a comment or two about this at Mashable:

1. What a waste of time and resources! It seems that Twitter is suddenly turning into the virtual playground of stars and Twitter execs are doing all in their power to please them.

I find it pretty ironic that Twitter execs are tending to the needs of a few, the same few that totally disregard what twitter is all about: interaction and sharing. Stars don’t follow back, they are an elite, they don’t even reply to you: most of them don’t even tweet, they have someone to do it for them.

2. Twitter should focus instead on the Spam accounts that invade our accounts every single day and deal with it asap. Increase security on the login process and make it as fail safe as possible.
