Using a CC License? Then this is for you!
If you have a website and and you are using a CC License there is a new tool, still on Beta, that helps you keep track of what was copied from your website plus something that I find really great:
Try going here and copy some text and then paste into a text editor.
Neat no?
Tynt’s Tracer Beta is what is behind this. A small JS script that you paste on your footer.php* actually adds your licensing terms to all of the content on your website: text, images, audio files, etc
Not only that, Tracer allows you to, via its DashBoard to keep in track what content was copied.
All you need to get Tracer up and running is to register your domain, choose your license and you are all set.
All you need to do now is to follow the instructions to include the script on your website.
After that you have access to a Dashboard that will help you identify several things:
You can find the Top Words:
“Top Words displays the top copied words on your entire site. The list can help you better identify keywords for search engine optimization and helps you trend what topics are the most popular site wide.“
And Top Pages:
“Top Pages lists the web pages on your site that have the most tracer activity on them. You can sort pages by any of the stats columns by clicking on the header. Click on any ‘Page’ listed to get the detailed information on that specific page.
* Unique Actions – the first time a user selects or copies something, per page view
* Copies – the total number of times users have copied from this page
* Generated Traffic – the number of visits to this page resulting from a tracer generated link, plus the number of pages visited afterwards
* Page Views – how many page views this page has receivedPages high in unique actions reflect content that users are engaging with on your site. Pages with high page views, but low unique actions, reflect content that users are not engaging with.“
You can also find the Top Images dashboard.
By clicking on any link on the Top Pages board will take you to a detailed summary of that post.
If you click on the “HeatMap” button, inside the page detail, you are taken to the page on your website with highlights of the content that was copied from it.
Another interesting thing that I have found is that , if you are using the Twitter for WordPress plug-in, Tracer will also manage the RTs that were made from those Tweets.
Still on Beta there is still a lot to be implemented on Tracer. But the beauty of it is that to catch such a tool at his phase of development will make you have input on the most wanted features.
