I’ve always been very vocal, to say the least, regarding spam and spammers on Twitter. Spam is one of the biggest problems we all have to face when using Twitter and, even if the company is doing a lot to fight it, every single day more and more spam accounts invade trending topics, our timelines and our followers lists.
There is no way to stop it, no way to prevent it, no way to avoid it.
Last night my friend, and fellow Bit Rebels companion, Clément Yeung called my attention to a video that left me in shock!! I mean REAL shock!! My mouth started to open around 15 seconds into the video and I was still staring at my laptop screen, with my mouth wide open, when it ended. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing: a software that can only be described as a spam-robots factory, a software that allows anyone to generate hundreds of accounts automatically, avoiding the (weak) security that Twitter has implemented so far.

If a picture is worth a thousand words this video is worth a million. Not to me, not to the regular user but to those at Twitter that are trying to fight spam, to those that are trying to go deep into the heart of the problem. Many of the security flaws that exist on Twitter are being exploited on this video and I’m willing to bet that if Twitter changed their Captcha system (those letters that show up when you first sign-up and that validate you as human) we would all see a big drop on the number of spam accounts.
This software should be illegal since what is doing is a crime: It’s the twitter equivalent of online drugstores that sell tainted medicine to people that are in a desperate situation.
Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it. Only Twitter’s team can and I hope they do and do it fast.
